To meet the challenge posed by a growing need for rapid, accurate and cost-effective surveying and mapping to support GIS analysis and civil engineering design applications.

Fast Facts

  • LiDAR remote surveying for speed, efficiency and safety.
  • Using MicroStation and Terrasolid to process LiDAR airborne survey data.
  • 3D visualisation and animation built in to MicroStation as standard.
  • MicroStation provides DWG support at the platform level eliminating concerns about running a mixed MicroStation and AutoCAD environment.

Blom Aerofilms is the United Kingdom's leading provider of aerial photography and digital map solutions for civil engineering design, environmental assessment and land information management. Some years ago, the company foresaw a growing need for rapid, accurate and cost-effective mapping to support GIS analysis and civil engineering design applications. LiDAR data combined with digital photography has allowed them to accurately map large areas of urban and rural landscapes in three dimensions. Blom has completed a number of large-scale and high-profile LiDAR-based projects built on MicroStation and the Terrasolid integrated software suite. Projects include a full survey of London’s M25 orbital motorway including all carriageway and "stubs and tails," totalling over 400 kilometers or 2500 line-kilometers of data. The project was flown at only 100 meters using helicopter-based LIDAR for vegetation penetration and high accuracy.
